Tradewind Voyages’ Golden Horizon arrived
in Cowes for its maiden
call on Wednesday 21 July.  Golden
Horizon is the world’s largest square-rigged sailing ship and will offer
voyages with unique sustainability credentials when it sails east from
September 2021. The five-masted sailing cruise ship is 524 feet (162 metres) long
and carries up to 272 passengers in luxurious accommodation with 159 crew.
The call forms part of its inaugural
season when the ship will return on 1 August
2021. The ship’s arrival continued the trend for
cruise ships to call at Cowes with 3 more ships scheduled for the rest
of the year.
Following the presentation of the
commemorative plaque to Captain Remi Eriksen of the Golden Horizon, Gary Hall
CEO of Cowes Harbour Commission commented that:
“We are delighted that Tradewind Voyages
chose to come to Cowes and the arrival of this prestigious ship on its
inaugural cruise is another example of Cowes being attractive to cruise lines
and their passengers.”
He continued to say:
“These increasingly regular visits raises Cowes’ profile,
attracts additional revenue to the town and provides the opportunity for
passengers to return to Cowes to further explore the island as a whole.”
It is hoped that these visits will aid in
the Island’s economic recovery post COVID and beyond.

Golden Horizon is the world’s largest
square-rigged sailing ship.   The hull is
strengthened to Ice Class standards for voyages to the Arctic and Antarctica
regions.
Aiming to use wind power for 70% of each
season, Tradewind Voyages is committed to maintaining its philosophy of
protecting the environment in all operations both onboard and ashore. It will
steer away from offering watersports that typically use gas to power engines.
Instead, guests will be able to snorkel, kayak, windsurf and paddleboard, among
other sports, to enjoy the ocean. Areas around the ship marina will also be
cordoned off for swimming.
Golden Horizon’s design is based on France
II, a legendary square-rigged tall ship built in 1913, and is inspired by Tea
Clippers and Cape Horners. Boasting five bars, impressive spa facilities, three
pools, a spectacular dining room with central skylight for top-notch dining and
a high staff-to-guest ratio means that first-class service is guaranteed for
