Keep the Solent waters safe

With the sailing season in Cowes well under way, and several major events of the year just around the corner, we feel it is the right time to remind all harbour users and visiting yachtsmen to dispose of black water from their boats responsibly.

All boaters are encouraged to make use of the pump out at Shepards Wharf Marina in Cowes, which is available and free to use all year round. The pump out berth is located on the south pontoon at Shepards; please call the marina on VHF Channel 80 and one of our Berthing Masters will be glad to help you. The marina levies no charges for the holding tank pump out in order to encourage more sailors and boaters to use the facility.

Water quality in Cowes Harbour and the Medina Estuary is extremely important to Cowes Harbour Commission and we continue to work in partnership with the Isle of Wight Estuaries Project and Environment Agency to raise awareness of responsible boat discharge.

In order to assist recreational boaters to locate and use pump-out facilities around the UK, The Green Blue has compiled a list of pump out facilities divided into regions, giving the location and contact details.

Kate Fortnam, Environmental Outreach Officer for The Green Blue, said: “We would ask boaters to think about water quality and spare a thought for their fellow dinghy sailors, windsurfers, water lovers and beachgoers with a few key actions including; using onshore facilities where possible, using a holding tank if they have one, or only emptying toilets when more than three miles offshore or in fast flowing areas.”

Having a holding tank on your boat enables you and your crew to enjoy your time on the water knowing that you are comfortable, responsible and compliant with relevant, local legislation. If you are thinking of installing a holding tank, the Green Guide to Holding Tank Installation will answer some common questions, whether you choose to self-install or find a company to do it for you. The environmental guide provides advice on the best construction materials for holding tanks, as well as installation and maintenance best practice. It also features a host of top tips on how to prevent system blockages and holding tank pong!
