Cowes breakwater construction update

We are pleased to report that breakwater contractors Boskalis Westminster have successfully installed an initial 1.5m layer of sand and gravel using a small dredger, which discharged via a floating pipeline to a sprayer barge anchored along the line of the breakwater.

The installation of a series of wick drains commenced on 2nd June 2014 using a stitcher sited on a large barge. The purpose of these drains is to draw the water from the seabed up to the surface, which in turn will increase the ground bearing capacity.

See photos of the stitcher at work in Cowes Harbour – plus other pictures telling the story of the Cowes breakwater construction.
